A shipbuilding subcontractor in Busan, South Korea, installed a CNC Tandem Press Brake to improve bending accuracy for long steel hull plates.
The company produces structural components for container ships and offshore platforms. Their previous press brake system required multiple setups for long plates, resulting in alignment errors and surface defects.
The new CNC tandem press brake system synchronized two high-tonnage press brakes into a single bending line. It featured laser angle measurement, CNC crowning, and heavy-duty tooling support.
The system enabled one-pass bending of 13-meter steel plates, significantly reducing handling time. Bending accuracy improved by 28%, while production cycle time dropped by 33%.
“The CNC tandem press brake allowed us to meet strict shipbuilding tolerances," said the technical director. “It eliminated bending inconsistencies and reduced operator fatigue."
Within six months, the shipyard increased production throughput and secured new contracts from Japanese and European shipping companies.
This case illustrates how CNC tandem press brakes are driving productivity improvements in Asia’s shipbuilding industry.
